Help us build the solutions that will keep your community safe from disease

COVID-19 has forever changed how we live.  Beyond COVID-19, this awareness and impact of infectious diseases is here to stay.  Shared spaces where we gather to work, play, shop, and travel have emerged as the focal point of the health defense strategy.  Songbird develops the solutions that make these shared spaces safer to re-enter with rapid testing and risk management tools, ensuring the health of both people and the economy.  Today our focus is largely on COVID-19, but the solutions we are building will form the core strategy of how we make shared spaces safe for decades to come.

This is the singular challenge of our generation.  It is our moon landing, only the stakes are far higher.  We’ve built a team of passionate and talented people committed to making the world safer.  It includes world class building scientists, infectious disease experts, operations engineers, data scientists, product designers, and more.  Our microscopic adversary is clever and evolving.  We are meeting the challenge with a team that is equally agile and creative, and above all else, committed to the hard science that is required to succeed.  Our work is not easy or boring.  But it is the most important work any of us have ever taken on, and we have built a team that understands the value of having fun while doing it.  Sound like a fit for you?  We’d love to hear from you.

Your Role

Songbird is growing fast and having great market success, but our financial systems are still in their infancy.  They need to be built out – fast!  You’ll be leading that build out of financial systems, overseeing accounting operations, and helping ensuring Songbird is making the right data-driven financial decisions.

You will be the first full-time hire into the finance group at Songbird, and be responsible for building up the financial systems and processes we need to operate. Songbird currently leverages an external firm for bookkeeping services, and you’ll lead the interface with that bookkeeping group to coordinate their activities.

You act as a player/coach in the execution of all the core accounting functions, some of which we will look to you to perform directly, some of which we will look to you to oversee the external bookkeepers on.  This role is very hands-on from a finance perspective, but with the ability to manage others as required.

You will work closely with the Sales organization, on our A/R and invoicing strategy, as well as our Supply Chain/Operations team, on our A/P and inventory management strategy. You will work with the General Manager to run the company’s budget cycle, and provide support to the operating units of Songbird in managing their spend an investments.

You will provide the financial input required by the business to make both tactical and strategic decisions.  This will include S&OP inventory planning, cash management, financial forecasting, and more.

We currently have the core essential financial platforms in place, but will look to you to review our needs and make alternative platforms decisions (and implement them) as appropriate. You will work with our bookkeeping and accounting partners in the preparation of financial statements, tax filings, and government funding reports

You will prepare financial management reports that provide context and commentary for the senior leaders and Board, to guide the decision making process. Beyond core finance tasks, you will also act as a resource for other part of the organization, providing assistance on contract administration and financial modeling of specific opportunities.

You will report to the General Manager of Songbird in this role.  At the outset, this role will be the sole full-time finance team member, but that team is expected to grow throughout 2021, and you will play a role in evolving that team.

Your Work Style

Songbird is not for everybody, we’re looking for a specific type of science-minded problem solver. You’re passionate about building a company that truly is helping to solve a massively important problem. You’re not “just” an accountant, you’re a true entrepreneur that can lend a hand wherever the fires are burning and enjoys learning on-the-fly.

You can see “beyond the numbers”, and can offer a mature and balanced opinion on complicated decisions that trade-off financial prudence, business strategy, and an aggressive growth mindset. You’re not intimidated by tackling new subject areas, and have a proven ability to ramp up quickly.

You’re comfortable with the early stages of a startup that are often messy and changing quickly. You stand out as someone that is highly creative and able to see alternative paths that get us to our destinations quicker and easier than most people expected.

Your Past Experience

We’re a team that is obsessed with learning, but there’s some things we hope you’ve already learned in past roles, and can bring that wisdom to the team.

You have a Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance.  Ideally you have a CPA designation, or are working towards it. You have a minimum 10 years’ experience in accounting/finance, and experience with financial reporting requirements, budget management, and cash flow management.

You have experience with a number of financial software platforms, and understand how and when to deploy them. Ideally you’ve had experience in S&OP planning, and exposure to a role in which inventory management was a primary concern of the finance team. You’re not a lawyer, but are comfortable with contract administration.
